What Data Do I Need for a 3D Model?

Plans, photos or measurements — what data does a 3D-printed model really need? The complete checklist plus tips on how good data lowers the price.

The good news first: you don’t need a finished CAD file. For a scale 3D model, a few plans, sharp photos and some key measurements are enough in most cases. The more complete and clean this input data is, the faster and cheaper your model comes together. This checklist shows what helps.

The three data sources

Models are built from three types of information — ideally from a combination:

  1. Plans and drawings supply geometry and measurements: floor plans, elevations, sections, site plans, and for technical work also P&IDs or layout drawings.
  2. Photos supply proportions, details and colour — everything the plan doesn’t show.
  3. Measurements anchor the model at the right scale: overall height, footprint, storey heights, distinctive components.

If one source is missing, the others partly make up for it. Have only photos? Then we need more measurements. Have complete plans? Then a few photos are enough as a check.

Checklist: architectural and property models

  • Floor plans of all relevant storeys (planning submission or as-built drawing, scans are fine too)
  • Elevations from all four sides
  • Section for storey heights and roof pitch
  • Site plan, if outdoor areas or neighbouring development are part of it
  • Photos of the real building (for existing structures) for facade, material and colour
  • Key measurements: ridge height, eaves height, floor plan dimensions

Checklist: industrial, plant and machine models

  • Layout or arrangement drawings of the plant
  • Dimensioned drawings of the main components (vessels, machines, conveyor routes)
  • Flow diagrams / P&IDs, if pipework should be visible
  • Photos from several angles, including detail shots
  • Overall dimensions and heights of the dominant components
  • Note on the level of detail wanted: which assemblies must be recognisable?

How to photograph correctly

When photos play a load-bearing role, care pays off:

  • Sharp and well lit, without hard cast shadows.
  • Several angles: every side, plus the corners at an angle.
  • Photograph as straight-on as possible, to reduce perspective distortion.
  • A scale reference in the frame: a door, a railing or a folding rule helps enormously.
  • Capture details separately where they matter.

Which formats we work with

We’re flexible: PDF, DWG, DXF, JPG, PNG, common 3D formats such as STEP or STL — and, if need be, even a photographed paper plan. What’s decisive is not the format, but that the information is legible and dimensionally verifiable.

Why good data saves money

Every hour of modelling costs €60–90 net. If we have to reconstruct geometry from blurry photos and estimate measurements, those hours add up. If, on the other hand, you supply clear plans and verified measurements, a large part of this work falls away — and the price drops. Good input data is the single most effective way to save.

What if data is missing?

Incomplete data is the norm, not an obstacle. Frequently asked questions

Do I need a CAD file?

No. A finished 3D CAD file speeds up the work, but it is not a prerequisite. We also reconstruct the model from 2D plans, photos and measurements.

Are phone photos enough?

Often, yes. What matters is sharp shots from several angles, taken as straight-on as possible and with a known dimension in the frame (e.g. a door). A great deal can be reconstructed from several good photos plus a few key measurements.

What if I'm missing measurements?

That's normal. We derive missing measurements from reference objects, plans and proportions, and confirm critical points with you. The more verified measurements you provide, the lower the effort.
